UX/Product Designer

Who are we?

Appointedd was born in 2011 when our founder and CEO, Leah, then a busy magazine editor, found herself unable to book an appointment with her hairdressers (and who hasn’t been there?). She saw a gap in the market for an easy online booking system. From that idea, Appointedd has grown into an industry-leading product, powering everything from small hairdressers to multi-national household names, and supported by a team of 30+ ambitious, talented people based in and around Edinburgh.

Due to COVID-19 we are currently in working-from-home mode, which is an option we’d like to keep for employees going forward to ensure everyone is comfortable in their working environment. We don’t have any plans for re-opening the physical office at this time, but that may be something we look to in the new year inline with any government guidelines. We will provide all the equipment necessary to ensure you have a comfortable working setup at home.

Our product team comes from a diverse variety of backgrounds, with several without a Computer Science background; one of the team has a degree in Biological Sciences, and another a degree in Chemistry with a background in teaching. As long as you have a passion for building and designing great software, we’re happy to have you. 🙌

About the role

We are looking for a UX / Product Designer to join our ambitious team in Edinburgh. 

You’ll focus on improving the user experience, product design and collaborate closely with the rest of the product team to help shape new and existing features within our platform.

You’ll report directly to the CTO, and will initially be the sole designer within the product team. As we grow our team, this opens up a great opportunity to lead the design function within the team.

We’re an open minded team, and love to be challenged. You’ll bring a growth mindset, and a keen eye for when a design, system or process can be improved – you’ll be empowered to propose and implement changes and have the chance to imprint your style within the design and product functions.

How we work

Our product teams work within “squads”. We don’t work with traditional product roadmaps. Our product development methodology is based on Shape-Up. This means we work to six-week development cycles, where the designer collaborates closely with the implementation squad to design and build solutions to problems.

You’ll also have the opportunity to “Shape” solutions to problems you see, and have an impact on the direction of the product development.

What we’re looking for

  • Ability to solve problems and communicate solutions through the use of design tools such as user flows, sketches, wireframes, and prototypes.
  • Ability to run usability testing sessions and iterate on UX.
  • Manage our Design System and UI component library and apply to solutions to ensure a consistent experience across our products.
  • Collaborate with our engineering team and Product Operations Manager throughout the product development process.
  • Conduct user research to understand our customer needs/pain points and apply to design decisions.
  • Strong eye for detail and visual aesthetic.
  • Drive to stay ahead of trends and constantly look to innovate with new technologies.
  • Understand WCAG Accessibility guidelines and be able to apply these principles.

Required experience

  • 3+ years of experience designing online product solutions
  • Previous experience working within a web application / platform
  • Proficient in Figma or similar tools
  • Experience with brainstorming tools such as Miro
  • Experience working closely with cross functional teams
  • Experience in building and maintaining design systems

If your CV is accepted, our interview process normally consists of the following steps:

  1. 📞 A 15-20 minute phone interview
  2. 🏢 A virtual Zoom interview that should last around 1-2 hours in total, including a short collaborative white-boarding session

We’re an Edinburgh based team though due to Covid-19 are currently working remotely. We have plans to return to the office so we would ideally like you to be in commute-able distance, but won’t require you to be in the office five days a week.
